Chiropractic Care for Allergies & Arthritis

When most people think of chiropractic care, they think of spinal adjustments for the treatment of lower back pain. While it is true that musculoskeletal health and alignment for the reduction of chronic lower back pain is a big part of what chiropractic care is all about, that is not the whole story.

.

Here at Molloy Chiropractic Center, Inc. in Vernon Hills, we deal with a number of seasonal conditions that one would not normally think to see a chiropractor for. These include allergies and arthritis.

Chiropractic Care for Allergies

When the body detects a substance that it recognizes as a harmful invader, the immune system will produce histamines that are intended to move antibodies into the affected area and flush out the invader. This causes inflammation, a runny nose, itchy eyes, congestion, and other irritating symptoms.

These symptoms include:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Headache
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Swelling
  • Coughing or scratchy throat
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Oftentimes, these symptoms are only an inconvenience, but they can be severe. Many people lose work from allergies each year, and sometimes an allergic reaction can even be life-threatening.

Chiropractic treatments for allergy symptoms have been very effective and have reduced the need for side effect-laden drugs for many people. Chiropractic treatments can reduce the frequency and severity of allergic reactions by altering the way the body responds to allergens. This is done chiefly by aligning the spine, which takes undue stress and tension off of the long nerves in the spinal column for a better-moderated response to allergens.

Chiropractic Care for Arthritis

Just as the body’s response to allergens is an inflammatory response, so too are arthritic conditions caused by inflammation. The inflammation that leads to arthritis is inflammation as a response to changes in temperature, overuse, injury and other common stressors on parts of the body most frequently affected by arthritis.

Many doctors and patients view arthritis as damage to the bone over time associated with age. This is only part of the cause of the condition. While age is a factor, the overwhelming cause of arthritic conditions and arthritic flare-ups is chronic inflammation.

Just as your chiropractic care professional can use spinal adjustments to reduce the effects of allergies- so too can the effects of arthritis be mitigated in the same way. Spinal adjustments as a treatment for arthritis can reduce the need for harmful painkillers and risky surgery.
